Project Sunshine is an initiative is run by Kamcare and their goal is to install 1 000 solar lights in informal settlements. The Butterfly Foundation was able to donate 100 solar lights (value R40 000). This will take Kamcare to the halfway mark of their target! These solar units (lights and panels) will be installed and monitored regularly by solar technicians. The only prerequisite for families to receive these lights, are that children attending school must be part of the household. The reason for this being so that children will be able to do homework and study at night. These houses were identified through a questionnaire done by a trusted social worker in the area. Currently there’s no electricity or running water, so one can imagine the need for light and charging a phone is of great value.
