One of the few but popular spots in Pretoria to go for a walk, cycle or view a sunset, is Klapperkop, or Klappies as the locals call it. But this beautiful piece of grassland in the middle of the city, became a dumping site, criminal hotspot and illegal squatter site over the years. God has build His love into everything He has made. This space, was lying here, waiting to be utilized for such a vital cause. Klappies needed a make over. The area needed to be cleaned up. It had to be made attractive for the community to want to go there. Safety needed to be improved and the perception of the area needed to be changed.
Klappies today has once a month a community hike of 4- 9 km is held. The attendance is between 30 – 80 people at a time. Except for getting into nature and experiencing God’s character and love, many meaningful conversations and connections take place between “strangers” during these walks. A coffee stand is organized for the day and a nice freshly brewed coffee to enjoy over extended conversation afterwards. A percentage is donated toward funding Project Klappies. Every other weekend, an event organizing company, Evolution trails, holds an organized trail run event on Klappies and also donates towards the project. Relationships with local businesses is being built to influence them to contribute toward the project in exchange for marketing.
