Sihamba Sonke “Move with Purpose” programme uses chess as a tool to teach life values through the game, helping students develop problem-solving skills while having fun through play.
The chess programme (pillar 1) is vehicle to access secular contexts, so that we are able to teach biblical life values from the chess board, while having fun growing student chess skills as we develop problem solving and decision making skills. The local mentors (pillar 2) that we developed are for example our local youth pastors in Zithulele. They play a role to contextualize the practical application of the life values for their environment, while modelling the values that we teach to the students. The local mentor then also plays and instrumental role in connecting the students to local healthy communities (pillar 3), where the values are practically modelled, such as a youth group at church or our local community chess club.
